Today is the birthday of Mae Carol Jemison, born in this day in Decatur, Georgia.
At an early age, Jemison had a love for science, a
love that followed her from grade school in Chicago, to a B.S. in Chemical Engineering and a
B.A. in African American Studies from Stanford, her M.D. from Cornell, to the Peace
Corps as a health officer in Liberia and Sierra Leone from 1983 to 1985, and
then into space as the first African American female astronaut.
