Today is birthday of William Somerset Maugham, M.D., (pronounced mawm), born in Paris, the youngest of six, he grew up speaking French, was handicapped by a stutter, and by the 1930's, he was the highest paid writer in the English language.
Educated in Cantebury, he went on to St. Thomas’ where he qualifed as a physician in 1897. While in Paris that same year, he published his first novel, Liza of Lambeth, which he based on his experiences with women in childbirth. His play, A Man of Honor, followed in 1903 and, with a string of theatrical successes in London, Dr. Maugham eventually left medicine altogether.
