Proving you don't have to be a billionaire like Mark Zuckerberg to have your name put on a hospital these days, monastery founder and missionary mogul, St. Francis of Assisi, recently announced that his foundation is donating his name, and a small bird, to a county hospital that will be renamed St. Francis General Hospital and Trauma Center; bringing 40 to the number of hospital and medical centers in the US under the St. Francis name. The bird will be used on the hospital logo.
Zuckerberg, who has an estimated worth of $33.3 billion, gave a measly $75 million to have San Francisco General Hospital renamed after him. Salesforce.com founder Marc Benioff’s name was added to UCSF’s children’s hospitals after donating $200 million, and venture capitalist Ron Conway’s name was added to UCSF’s Gateway Medical Center after his $40 million contribution. But neither come close to number of hospitals named after St. Francis, best known for having no money and a devotion to a life of poverty.
Neither Zuckerberg nor St. Francis would comment on the relatively small donation they both made, but in a statement St. Francis said, “Grant me the treasure of sublime poverty: permit the distinctive sign of our order to be that it does not possess anything of its own beneath the sun, for the glory of Your name, and that it have no other patrimony than begging.”
Best known for saying absolutely, St. Joseph, with 81 US hospitals claiming his name, again, had no comment.
